What is Herbal Medicine?
Herbal Medicine has been used and practiced long before the invention of pharmaceutical medicines. People have been using plants for healing for thousands of years. However, what makes herbalism effective is not what plants they use but how they use them.
Herbs are used to treat the whole person verses one issue. Herbal medicine offers you a holistic, natural alternative to health and wellness. A holistic approach means that as your body begins to come into balance, the mind and spirit share in renewed vitality and strength and a feeling of ‘wholeness’ returns. That is the essence of holistic healing and the heart of herbal medicine.
Today's herbal market industry advertises using herbs the same way we have been taught to use western medicine. An example is, if someone has psoriasis, take this herb. If they have high blood pressure, take this one. When herbs are used in this manner they are not always effective. This approach to herbalism can leave one feeling frustrated and unsure if herbs really work. That's why I use a holistic approach in which I consider the person as a whole and offer them herbs specifically beneficial to their particular case. This way, herbal remedies can be very effective.
The question "What herb can I take for this health issue" is frequently asked by beginners who are forming an interest in herbs. They have a health issue and they’d like to use herbs to help that problem (understandably so). However, if a person is seeking out ways to naturally resolve their health issues, this is not the best way to approach it. However, there is always an exception to the rule like, if a person has an insect bite or a bee sting, minor cut or a bruise then there are many herbs to quickly and easily recommend. If the person has a chronic health issue, the treatment is more complicated. I work with people to restore health from the root of the problem. It is impossible to assign one herb to chronic diseases without knowing more about the person than the name of their disease. Rather than using herbs to suppress symptoms I like to know why the person is experiencing bad health. Western medicine may diagnose 5 people with psoriasis and treat them all with the same “medicine”, I believe it is more important to look at the individual and the problems they are specifically experiencing. How is their diet? How are they sleeping? Is there something going on with their digestive tract? What is their stress level? The answers to these questions, along with many others, help to determine the best way to restore health and wellness. Stating the name of a disease does not determine why a person has bad health.
Another important thing to keep in mind is which medications clients are taking. While most herbs are safe with little to no unwanted side effects, herbs and drugs can sometimes interact negatively. It is important to work closely with your Herbalist to establish a safe and effective way to use herbal remedies. There is no standardized way to take herbal dosages. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, Herbalists offer personalized Herbal Medicine, with instructions on how the herb should be taken.
